A fibre optic probe being developed at The University of Bristol, University of Exeter, and Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for on-the-spot cancer screening has been identified by The Royal Academy of Engineering's Enterprise Hub as one of the new exciting technologies of the future.

The probe is used to direct laser light onto cells and identify the cell type by analysing the interaction of the light with the molecules of the cell. Using this technique, the group can detect cancerous changes within cells almost instantaneously.

The Enterprise Hub is a new national resource for the UK's engineering entrepreneurs and aims to identify and support emerging technologies by enabling ideas to become successful businesses.
